Iowa City is home to the University of Iowa, founded in 1847, offers more than 100 areas of study to 31,000 students.
The university includes a medical school and one of the United States’ largest university-owned teaching hospitals, providing patient care within 16 medical specialties.
Iowa City is also the location of Mercy Hospital. The University of Iowa College of Law is located here.
Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church is a historic African American congregation and building in Iowa City. The congregation was established in 1868. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
Iowa City has a variety of cultural events. Iowa City is the home of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, Iowa City Jazz Festival, Iowa Arts Festival, the Iowa City Book Festival and the Landlocked Film Festival which are enjoyed by visitors and local residents alike.
